Monty Python and the Holy Grail Storyline: The movie starts out with Arthur, King of the Britons, looking for knights to sit with him at Camelot. He finds many knights including Sir Galahad the pure, Sir Lancelot the brave, the quiet Sir Bedevere, and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir Lancelot. They do not travel on horses, but pretend they do and have their servants bang coconuts to make the sound of horse's hooves. Through satire of certain events in history (witch trials, the black plague) they find Camelot, but after literally a quick song and dance they decide that they do not want to go there. While walking away, God (who seems to be grumpy) come to them from a cloud and tells them to find the Holy Grail. They agree and begin their search. While they search for the Grail, scenes of the knight's tales appear and why they have the name they have. Throughout their search they meet interesting people and knights along the way. Most of the characters die; some through a killer rabbit (which they defeat with the holy ...

just brilliant
This Monty Python movie is just a brilliant movie. There isn't much else to call it, it's just brilliant. People who die before seeing this movie, haven't lived, that's my opinion. If I have to say what my best movie is, it's this movie about a couple of horseless knights who are seeking the holy grail. The most brilliant passage in the film is the scene where the Rabbit of Caerbannog attacks the knights. It's just brilliant.

En nu voor de nederlandstaligen: Deze film is gewoon geniaal, de beste komedie die ik ooit gezien heb !!!

En ik weet dat vele van jullie hetzelfde vinden.

Come and See the Violence Inherent in the System
While many agree this film is a comedy classic, few may realize it is also a mythological and historical classic.

One of the things I love about the Pythons is the many levels on which their comedy works. As a child I loved the slapstick of the monks whacking themselves in the head with boards (or is it Bibles?), the Black Knight refusing to give way at the bridge when challenged, the funny weird people digging in the mud.

As an adult I then marvelled at the intelligent and hilarious satire of religious and political subjects of which I had no inkling when I first fell in love with this film: The monks are penitents, and no crazier that many of their true-history contemporaries. The Black Knight is a psychopathic serial killer. The mud people are Fir Bolg members of an Anarchist commune (or is it Socialist? Anarcho-Syndicalist?) and the Knights are riding along Hadrian's Wall.

Even later in life now, as a Celtic scholar, I'm again impressed by their knowledge of myth and history, and by how well they not only satirize, but further illuminate, The Matter of Britain.

This film should be required viewing for all classes in Celtic Studies, World Mythology, Marxist Thought in the 20th Century, Folklore, The Applied Sciences, Astronomy, Folk Dancing, Fencing, Witch Hunting, Archery, Shrubbery, Moose Hunting, Religious History and Anarcho-Syndicalist Communes.

But....
See this and you will never watch a historical / fantasy / armour wearing film the same way again. Boorman's Excalibur trembles when Holy Grail is in the neighbourhood!

Breath of fresh air.

Chapman excels.

Best Comedy Ever (Including the ending)
Almost everyone seems to like this movie but very few people enjoy the ending. I thought it was a great ending that fits right in with how the Python's did most of their sketches on the show......no real ending. How else would they end it....a big fight scene and a happy ending? That's not a good ending either and it's not a Python ending.

Ach, it's just a wee bonnie rabbit....
For sheer originality on an ultra-low budget, nothing can quite match the chemistry, comedy, and utter lunacy of Monty Python, and it all seems to come together in this, their most quotable motion picture.

But enough of that silliness. This 1971 hit, which is to date the most recognisable of the Python's efforts, still holds strong. But like so many other great controversial cult things, you either get it, or you don't. And if you don't, you hate it.

I'm a very literary minded guy, with a very literary attitude towards life. And the sheer surreallity of Monty Python is one of the most hilarious things I can find, the total unexpected twists from reality into the downright bizarre! And what a blast at the classic Arthur legend, especially in the following line: "Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government!" So much for fable!

So, what does all this mean? I'll tell you what it all means!

NI!!!

Probably the best comedy ever made.
I heard a lot of things about Monty Python and the Holy Grail from my friends who had seen it. They said that it was the funniest movie that they had ever seen, and so I suggested that I must pick up this movie on DVD and watch it. So, I sat down, watched it and I agree that this is probably one of the, if not, "the" best comedy ever made.

STORY: Monty Python and the Holy Grail follows Arthur, King of the Britons (Graham Chapman) and his servant Patsy (Terry Gilliam); who they're looking for some knights to join them at Camelot. When they meet, King Arthur gets a message from God that he and his fellow knights must go on a quest to find the Holy Grail. When they do that, they come across very ridiculous, but rather amusing encounters.

MY THOUGHTS: The humor in Monty Python and the Holy Grail is so silly and clever that it blows every American comedy that has been made in the last couple of years out of the water. British comedy literally isn't painfully dumb than American comedy, although ridiculous, the humor in British comedy can make you laugh. That's what I liked a lot in Monty Python and the Holy Grail; is the humor.

Some of the animations are beautifully drawn and it gives a way to set up the subplot; just excellent. The way they used coconut halves and banging them together to make it sound like a horse trotting is so amusingly clever. The encounters were so funny and genuinely amusing, especially the encounter with The Black Knight, which I think is one of the silliest scenes in the history of comedy ("'Tis but a scratch." "Just a flesh wound."). And the part where King Arthur and his knights come across a French soldier who is taunting, another very hilarious scene ("I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elderberries."). There is also more, which I won't give away because I don't want to spoil the whole movie for everybody who hasn't seen this movie.

The main characters and a few of the supporting characters like Tim the Enchanter and Prince Herbert are very likable, hilarious, and well-developed. Although the rest have short appearances, they were funny as well. There were a lot of silly moments in Monty Python and the Holy Grail that I suggest that people should definitely check out.

THE ACTING: The acting in this is excellent and very funny. Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, among the other guys from "Monty Python", they do excellent playing multiple roles.

IN CONCLUSION: Monty Python and the Holy Grail is – without a doubt – the best comedy ever made. I can't recommend this movie enough. This is definitely worth checking out.

Now watch this movie or I shall taunt you for a second time!
I will preface this by saying that while I'm not a big Monty Python fan, when they get it right, it is brilliant. The show had some great sketches, but some were just bizarre and incomprehensible. The movie is 100% on the mark, starting from the titles with subtitles to its off the wall ending.

It would be a disservice to explain the movie and the great scenes in this review. But a few things to note.

First, when you take into account that this film was done in 1974, most medieval movies of the time were glamorous set pieces with handsome knights and beautiful princesses. The Pythons skewered this notion completely: Arthur and his knights were commonplace blokes, and the sets were in some muggy, ugly areas. This may have been a budgetary issue, but interestingly enough, they probably depicted medieval England more authentically than even films nowadays.

Second, the amount of times the fourth wall is broken are numerous, and just goes to shows how dementedly hilarious the movie gets, but yet still holds the story well.

That said, if you have never seen Monty Python (who hasn't?), this is a whole different level of comedy--yes, silly is about right, but not in the crude "Paul Blart" or "Larry the Cable Guy" type of silly, but at the same time, not the cerebral "Dr. Strangelove" type of silliness.

Must watch.

Without a doubt, the funniest film I've ever seen.
There's a huge difference between American humor and British humor. American humor is the fart and burp joke while British humor is the arguing over a pointless subject joke. Python is British. Therefore, there will be many people who won't "get" this film. But those who do will have the comedy experience of a lifetime.

With a plot that can be summed up in 10 words (King Arthur and his knights search for the Holy Grail), this film isn't deep or emotional. However, the dialogue is so funny and the acting so excellent that the film feels like an epic-minus a large budget. The budget is the only problem with the film, and it doesn't detract much. You might notice the crummy special effects, but there aren't many, so it doesn't matter. Other than that, the film is beautifully shot. The epic Scottish landscapes are perfect for the film. The medieval costumes and sets are also great, but it's the acting which makes this film a true classic.

All the Pythons are fantastic. Graham Chapman is hilarious as the straight-faced King Arthur, along with a few other roles. His straight man occasionally delves into the "silly", which makes for an excellent performance. John Cleese, my personal favorite of the Pythons, is funny as the French Taunter and- my favorite role in the film- the eccentric, pyromaniac, spitting Tim the Enchanter! Michael Palin has one of the funniest moments in the film while in the Castle Anthrax with about 20 young girls. Terry Jones is a riot as the timid Prince Herbert, who sounds like Michael Crawford and yearns to escape his castle with Sir Lancelot. Eric Idle is very funny as Sir Robin, the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir Lancelot, who frequently wets his pants and runs away. And Terry Gilliam, besides providing beautiful animation sequences, has a variety of funny small roles, including the "horse" Patsy.

Not a scene goes by that isn't funny. The humor is rich, including Knights who Say Ni, Killer Rabbits, politically active peasants, a knight who refuses to give up even when he's lost all his limbs, and a group of minstrels who sing of "bravely running away". The film is the funniest film I've ever seen. Shouldn't that be good enough for you?

Ni.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is one of the zaniest, most memorable comedies. From the very beginning credits when we find out that llamas directed the film, to its hilarious ending, there's no questioning of how this is a cult hit. In a series of vignettes, King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, who go on Holy Grail crusades and eat ham and jam and Spam a lot, have many crazy medieval adventures. Lots of memorable gags abound in this Python classic, including the Knights Who Say "Ni!", a vampire rabbit, the coconuts, and the Black Knight. It doesn't get old, even if it's viewed several times. Monty Python's most popular film in America, and a farcical anarchic comedy that keeps the belly laughs coming over and over again.

Grade: 10/10 Rating: PG (violence/gore, language, sexual innuendo)

A film which was an unusual but true life changing experience for me
When the Monty Python programmes started on British TV in the late 1960's I tuned into the humour from the first second and what made them that little bit more amusing was that my dad just didn't get any of it. We both laughed at other comedians or comedy films but the Monty Python experience was not one that appealed to him. I highly recommend anyone watch this film because you will find out whether you find it funny or not and from my point of view I hope you find it as highly amusing as I do. I cannot adequately describe the film itself its just the Monty Python experience in full flow and firing on all cylinders. I have watched the film numerous times and it still presses all my buttons where humour is concerned. This particular piece of cinematic brilliance had a life changing effect on me and although their will be many out there that will be doubtful or incredulous I myself have no doubts about how significant this film was for me. At the time the Monty Python team in my opinion were a groundbreaking new broom in comedy and set the standard which very few aspiring comedians have been able to match let alone emulate. Enjoy the 91 minutes of comedy genius.
