Kaminey Storyline: Guddu and Charlie are identical twins born and raised in the slums of Mumbai. They dream of leaving the squalor behind and moving into a life of prosperity and dignity. Though they look alike, the two are as different as chalk and cheese: one lisps while the other stammers; one is an honest, diligent social worker while the other hedges bets at a racecourse. The brothers want nothing to do with each other, but when Charlie gets mixed up in a deadly get-rich-quick scheme and Guddu realizes that the love of his life has unwittingly put a price on his head, their lives begin to collide. Faced with rogue politicians, drug dealers and crooked cops, they uncover a sinister plot laid out by the 'political-police-underworld' nexus. Their stories finally converge to a point when they realize they only have each other.

Vishal Bharadwaj does it again
Vishal Bharadwaj, stand up and take a bow.

Movies relating to crime made in India usually have more than a tinge of the clichéd anti-establishment scenario, where one good man is fighting simeltaneously against an evil crime syndicate and a corrupt police force, often at the same time, with nothing but his iron will and bare hands, and believe it or not, the good guy always wins.

Finally, a movie has been made in Bollywood (for lack of a better word), that isn't about a crusade between good and evil, it isn't about "the ordinary man caught in extraordinary circumstances", and its certainly not your run-of-the-mill cops and robbers scenario.

Kaminey is a story, plain and simple, edgy, entertaining, funny, and exhilarating all at once. Vishal Bharadwaj has added another class-act to his already impressive portfolio (see Maqbool, OmKaara, Blue Umbrella). Though unlike his earlier movies, two of which were excellent adaptations of plays by Shakespeare (Macbeth and Othello) the subject matter is less heavy, but movies shouldn't be judged by content (ask Alfred Hitchcock), this movie is a true work of art.

The movie makes no attempt to test the moral fibre of the audience, its a simple "sit back and have the ride of a lifetime" movie. Once again, the director (who has also written the dialogues) manages to use nuances of Indian culture and language that we witness everyday to great effect, without going over the top.

The overall direction was superb, in fact, it was better than superb. Everything from the hand-held camera movements, to the editing (both visual and sound) was spot on. Glimpses of Tarantino and Ritchie are evident in the film, though i want to make it clear that this movie is no rip-off. The director manages to use certain styles developed by the two iconic directors and blend them into something that is the cinematic equivalent of tandoori chicken, which for those who don't know, is really tasty.

The acting was excellent, Shahid Kapoor truly comes of age as the stuttering Guddu and the lisping Charlie, pulling off the dialogues and mannerisms without a hitch, Priyanka Chopra too was excellent as the fiery Sweety, in fact hers was the stand-out performance of the movie. Honourable mention for all the supporting cast as well. All the characters, from the crooked cops, to the scheming Bhope Babu, the unusually likable drug-lord Tashi and the psychotic Bengali brothers.

Highly recommended.
Stylish, Dark Thriller
It is hard to follow Omkara, even for someone like Vishal Bharadwaj. So he takes a very predictable, though risky route - do something completely different with no trace of his past works. Thankfully, he does well.

I guess, there are two ways in which we may look back at 'Kaminey' a few years from now (depending on how those few years turn out): (a) The coming-of-age film for Shahid Kapoor; (b) The watershed film for 'Indianized' thrillers.

There are very few who would bet on Shahid Kapoor in a role other than that of a lover boy. Fewer still who could pull it off. Vishal Bharadwaj unveils a Shahid Kapoor we never knew. He (the latter) does a fantastic job in the double roles of Charlie and Guddu. In fact, none of the actors disappoint. All get under the skin of their characters.

In last few years, we have been made to endure endless crap in the name of thrillers or worse still comic-thrillers (e.g. Tashan, all Sanjay Gupta films, all films with Sanjay Dutt as 'bhai', etc). Indian directors have been desperately trying to create stylish, sleek thrillers but ended up with cheap Hollywood imitations studded with expensive cars, Armani suits and aerial shots of America/Europe. Style comes naturally to 'Kaminey' through its pace, realistic locations, brilliantly sketched characters and smart screenplay.

Vishal Bharadwaj is extremely and variously talented. The risks he takes without being carried away (why am I thinking of Anurag Kashyap?) makes him probably the best we have. Kaminey is definitely not an Omkara or Maqbool or Blue Umbrella. But it is original, funny, stylish and dark. A must watch.
Aife aife kaife kaife
It's hard to tell if the original draft by Cajetan Boy (credited with the idea) explored the various facets of brotherhood. Given Bharadwaj's Shakespearean leanings, it is likely that they are his own. After multiple viewings, this aspect of Kaminey gains more prominence than any other and that includes the more exalted - Bharadwaj's TarantinoRitchiesque approach to the screenplay, Shahid Kapoor's research behind the execution of the speech defects, Amol Gupte, Priyanka Chopra and Dhan Ta Nan. The elderly Bengali brothers Mujeeb and 'Fumon' are avuncular in their adoration of Mikhail who prefers Charlie's company much like Charlie himself. The estranged twins, Charlie and Guddu must exorcise their childhood demons before they can patch up things between them. The cops Lobo and Lele are a Vega brothers-like (Tarantino's unfulfilled project with Travolta and Madsen playing their characters from Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs) couple, gun touting and cool in a crisis. Also, Lele's devotion seems matchless until it is tested. And then there's Bhope Bhau who inspires a fraternity that lasts as long as notions of lucrative gain remain with his 'baarat'.

Vishal Bharadwaj's flair for dialogue that alternates between pithy modern-day aphorisms and poetry ("kare woh, bhare main") is evident here too, although it is much toned down in comparison to Maqbool and Omkara. 'Bhanwara aaya re ... phatak' and 'Pehli baar mohabbat ki hain' are examples of his musical and poetic abilities.
We got the Sholay of the 21st century !
Excellent Marvellous Fantastic Bravo the words are few for this movie. I am writing this review after watching it for the 3rd time. And still I want to see it a few more times. Once I wrote on the Slumdog Millionaire review that Indian Film makers should learn some thing from Danny Boyle , But now I am glad to have seen such an excellent Indian movie. You can say it is at par to Spiderman I , or Batman The Dark Knight, or even Slumdog Millionaire. Or something like the City of Gods Each scene is so nicely shot and the perfect direction and acting and editing. And Dialogues are Ummmmm really nice. " Ife Pata Nahi ki duniya kitni haramzadi hai , aur tum fale Kutte kitne bade kaminey Ho" Lolx . On the other hand Music and Lyrics are also excellent of this movie. Vishal Bharadwaj and Gulzar has done excellent job. Vishal Bharadwaj should be really applauded for giving us such a nice movie. The movie is so realistic , its not so filmy type. Even the gangsters and those Maharashtrian Marathi Bhope LOL.
One of those few and far between Indian Cinema
A great movie. One of those few Indian movies which grips the audience from the start to finish. A very simple story which has been told in celluloid heaps of times before, has been befittingly exhibited on the big screen. Shahid Kapur who until before this movie seemed to be one of those movie stars who was below par in performance and got lucky to have a girlish face and colour that most Indians admire, caught me off guard with his brilliant performance. I was left flabbergasted with my jaw hitting the floor. Boy!! did he just pull it off? Not to mention the quintessential performance by the Priyanka Chopra. She nailed this one for sure!!

Movies such as Omkara, Khosla ka Ghosla, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, DevD, Gulaal, Kaminey, to name a few, are definitely changing the face value of Indian Cinema. The movies are well thought of before embarking on the projects. Hope to see more of such movies coming out rather than the senseless chick flicks!!

1. Great Cinematography (9/10) 2. Great Acting by all the actors. (9/10) 3. Great Direction (9/10) 4. Excellent Editing work (10/10) 5. Great scores (9/10)

Yeah Baby!!!
Vishal Bharadwaj has done it again. After tense stories of Maqbool & Omkaara, he takes a deliberate take away from Shakespeare and delivers instead an awesome dark and twisted tale of two brothers each with his own share of mess to take care of, not to mention their speech impediments that provide some great sounding dialog to the audience and depth to the characters.

The film does not try to emulate one as the good brother and the other gone wrong. That's not what the director wants to show.

One brother knocks up a Don's sister unknowingly (the buildup to this is awesome) and the other one chances upon a guitar full of cocaine. As the plot thickens, both the brothers must gets their hands on the same cocaine to save their lives. Then, the director takes on a joyride through the shanty towns of Mumbai.

The film has strong overtones of the current issues in Mumbai politics and a leading lady in Priyanka Chopra, who is very much representative of present day Indian girl. She is no arm candy, she has a pivotal role and takes the film to its climax. A climax that drags on with one little twist after another, but it is't boring. by the end of it, you would want another.

The music is very good and does not interfere with the pace of the film. Gulzar has again delivered deep meaning lyrics that are more in sync with the film's theme than with classic poetry.

There are a lot of characters to take care of in the film and it's easy to lose to track, but none is less important than the other. Each one has a defined part and is intertwined in the destinies of Guddu & Charlie. It does remind you of Guy Ritchie films like Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels etc but it is in no way an imitation of such works. It is a complete masterwork in its own right.

With Jab We Met, Shahid Kapur showed that he can carry a film on his own, Kaminey shows that that two of him are better than one. He plays both his parts with such panache that its hard to see that its the same actor. This could well be the point when he lands more serious roles and less of the boy next door.

The film is dark with everybody fighting for survival but the presentation is such that you do feel for the people in it but can't help but sadistically laugh at them. that is what Bhardwaj has been able to achieve with Kaminey which very few directors in India can manage to.

Definitely one of the best works of contemporary Indian cinema.
Dhan Te Nan!!!!
Now get this straight: 'Kaminey' is a milestone, Writer-Director Vishal Bhardwaj surpasses himself in 'Kaminey'.

I am stunned, truly stunned to see a film like 'Kaminey'.... The film's script is normal, nothing out-of-the-box, but the execution is amongst the finest ever in Indian Cinema. A winner all the way....

Everything is perfect in 'Kaminey', the direction & writing, the music, the background score, the cinematography, the performances. From all sides, 'Kaminey' is a big winner! Two brothers who hate each other, gangsters, a heroine.... heard before right? 'Kaminey' starts off with a bang and ends the same.

the director establishes both the characters in it's first 10 minute. Charlie is chasing a person, while Guddu is creating Aids awareness in colony's. Right from the moment go, you gripped into the world of this Kaminey's... The first hr keeps you interested, but the second is so so gripping that you can't even take a blink.

Performances: Expected Shahid to take away all the cake, but it's Amole Gupte who steals the show with an outstanding performance. Playing the pure Marathi with astounding ease; he's an incredible actor! Shahid is fabulous, playing the dual roles with amazing understanding. Note the sequence when both the brothers come face-to-face, when Guddu attempts to take away the guitar from Charlie, he's so real that you feel your indeed seeing two completely different people. His best work so far. Priyanka Chopra is first-rate. Plus, her Marathi accent is apt. Tenzing Nima is superb as Tashi. Chandan Roy Sanyal, Shiv Subrahmanyum, Hrishikesh Joshi & Ronnie are excellent in their parts.

on the whole 'Kaminey' is a trend-setter. Two Big Thumbs Up!
A hugely enjoyable compromise!!
So here it is .. the latest flick from Vishal Bhardwaj who is widely considered to be one of the best directors to emerge from the Bollywood factory in recent years. It has been widely compared to the work of Guy Ritchie which is true to some extent in its style of storytelling and something of a novelty for the majority of Indian audiences. It has been also called a very hollywoodish film (whatever that means!)..if that it means better production values yes Kaminey delivers.. if it means asking the audience to be more active viewers ..yes otherwise the analogy escapes me. Kaminey does not pretend to be anything more than a mass entertainer that the jaded multiplex audiences of India may enjoy and it delivers on that account. It is quite clear that to achieve this objective Vishal makes some calculated compromises like casting Priyanka Chopra who despite her excellent performance is miscast. He also uses the identical twin in a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde formula which is handled well except for a botched black and white back story. Shahid Kapoor delivers a fantastic performance as well most of the cast. The standout feature of the film is the music which shows that Vishal the music director was more at ease in this venture that his director self. Overall a film worth watching a couple of times but definitely not an Omkara!!
great film
Vishal is back after OMKARA n MAQBOOL this time with a diff kinda genre

The film is like a Torantino film and handled very well by Vishal

The first half is kinda confusing for some people and also the pace is too fast for indians but the film is well handled

The scenes between Charlie and his friend Mikhail and all his scenes till the interval are brilliant even the Guddu- Sweetie scenes are well handled the marriage scene is brilliant even the problems faced by Shahid are well handled

The second half is also brilliant The scene between Shahid and Amol Gupte is brilliant and also the death scene of Mikhail The scenes that ensue keep you on tenterhooks The scene where the brothers meet is brilliant and also the entire track where Priyanka goes violent The house scene between both Shahids the finale though prolonged and too violent is a good culmination

Direction by Vishal is superb Music is good, esp DHAN TANA TANA and title song luckily not many songs Camera-work is good and suits the theme but too many shaky frames are used which at times jars Sync sound is well maintained Amongst actors Shahid excels in both roles and is brilliant Check him out in the house scene or the scene between him and Amol he is superb He also looks great and strong in the charlie role and the ruthlessness is brilliantly handled by him He is very good as Guddu too Priyanka excels and does a great job especially when she gets angry Amol Gupte is a revelation, in his first film he is so mindblowing that he chews other actors Mikhail and the rest are brilliant too
Not great but watchable
Yeah the movie wasn't too bad after all the hype and stuff that was created. Anyway, the direction was good.. Shahid did well to get the "chocolate boy image" (BTW! which sounds so fuking GAY!) off. He has shown everyone that he is more than just a pretty boy. Priyanka didn't look a lot like a Marathi girl except for the way she dressed. But not many could have pulled it off the way she did. I don't know a lot about screenplay and all that crap so I'd say it is a one-time watch.

And thanks Mr.Bharadwaj for not casting Kareena Kapoor and for at least making a movie that we could sit through.. The rest of the Bollywood movies suck !
