Nothing New Here.
It practically defines the words "routine thriller." Pieces of the plot are taken from "In The Line of Fire" and "The Fugitive" and probably others. It's about a Secret Service agent (Douglas) who is framed as part of a very real plot to assassinate the president of the United States. It's hard to imagine why Michael Douglas, who has both talent and a high salary, should be chosen for this undemanding role. The producers had a good chance to hire some talented but lesser-known figure, saved money without sacrificing quality, and wind up with the same results. And the director doesn't add much. The camera seems always to be moving. It jerks and spins jiggles and racks and zip pans and goes unexpectedly and unnecessarily into step motion. Now a real novelty would be if they held the damned thing still.

It's always interesting these days to see Hollywood floundering around in an attempt to find a suitable ethnicity for the heavies. Hippy radicals and black liberationists are as extinct as the passenger pigeon. Germans are showing up less often as World War II fades from memory, except that they do put in their occasional appearances still, as in "Die Hard." Like "Air Force One," this film opts for our old Cold War adversary, the Russians, "ex-KGB", but who are now identified as coming from someplace with a name like Samovaristan. Where and when will we see a new enemy on the Hollywood screen? The Arabs are waiting tensely in the wings for their introduction. Oh, sure, they'll have to come from another fictional country -- too much oil in the Middle East to rub anyone's fur the wrong way -- but the audience will be able to decipher the code. They may be from The Monarchy of Ramada but to us they'll always be "Arabs". Probably a radical sect of Moslems. Actually the chief hood in this film happens to have a working-class British accent but what the heck -- one foreign accent is as good as another.

The first half hour is filled with intrigue. Douglas is hated by one of his colleagues, Agent Javert or whatever his name is, played by Kiefer Sutherland, because of an imagined affair with Sutherland's wife. The fact is though that Douglas has been having an affair with the president's wife, Kim Basinger, so when Douglas is asked during a polygraph whether he's done anything to break the code of the Secret Service, well -- he flunks it. And the chase is on. Shootouts in malls, hotel basements, ships, in mid-air, on rooftops, and in seedy rooms. The bad guys all die. The good guys all live.

You've seen better.

You have to be on life support to consider this "thriller" intense...
I saw the film tonight at a free preview screening, and despite the fact that I didn't pay a dime to see this film I still felt ripped off. Ladies and gentlemen, time is money and if you see this film you are leaving a Benjamin on your seat. The acting is torpid at best; Kiefer Sutherland phones in his worst impersonation of Jack Bauer, and Michael Douglas looks like he realizes he made a bad choice leaving Catherine Zeta-Jones for the duration it took to shoot this turkey. Eva Longoria is a non-entity; she looks like she's reading her lines off a teleprompter. And if you can't spot the "mole" within the first 20 minutes, then you just landed on this planet from a world without TV and recycled story lines. If you truly want to see a good secret service thriller, rent In the Line of Fire. If you see and buy into this one, you'll start to fear for the president's safety because the Secret Service looks and acts like the grown-up versions of the kinds from 90210. No matter what your feelings about W, let's hope this "art" does not imitate life.

This movie isn't great thing but it's very fun
I thought that The sentinel was going to be a totally mediocre movie. When I finally saw it,I took a good surprise. The movie isn't great thing but it's fun and the action scenes are well done. This movie reminded me TV series like 24 or Alias. It's very similar to that series and it reminded me too,to the Wolfgang Petersen's thriller In the line of fire.If you're going to expect one of the most original and and one of the greatest thrillers in the history of movies, you will be disappointed. But if you go with moderate expectations, you will enjoy The sentinel.

Good or bad
I have watched this movie and to be honest i didn't like at all. because it's a(you know) to Dejavu . I have watched of a billion movies. similar to this film(you know with terrorist or enemy agents trying to kill some American political big shot like a president, senator) and then the main character(in this case Michael Douglas)in the last second. saves everything (to much patriotism i these movies) . That's why they don't get awarded with Oscars!!!!. The problem with this movies are the predictable (happy) endings. This movies for the non-American population never gets success because they are tired of patriot movies

a whole lot of nothing
Well this movie was dangerously close to being as dry and boring as the Manchurian Candidate. What appears to be a star studded lineup is nothing more than a let down and disappointment.

I got nothing to say about the story cause there ain't much of a story. Its a whole lot of this and that yawn after the beep.

The only reason I even give it a 3 is Eva and nice shots of Toronto. For once a movie actually admits its filmed in Tononto.

I was expecting a cross between the Fugitive, 24 with a little twist of its own. If thats why you wanna watch this movie please be advised, Don't waste your money.

Classic case of a great trailer to a dumb movie.
The first twenty or so minutes of The Sentinel actually were interesting. Some pretty shots of the White House and D.C. area offering insight into a life spent in secret service by Micheal Douglas. Then the film has no idea what to do with itself. Kiefer Sutherland(in full 24 form, Kim Basinger and Eva Longoria(why???) have nothing to do but to try and figure out how they all ended up in a movie this predictable. It's sad that Kiefer took time away from the great 24 just to make this poor 24 wannabe. If Oscars ever get given to trailers this movie deserves one as the biggest tease of the year. I felt cheated. Never being a huge Michael Douglas to begin with, I appreciated his work in Falling Down, Wall Street, and Fatal Attraction but seeing him on screen in this mess I felt like he felt cheated to.

A Nutshell Review: The Sentinel
At first glance, this film looks like the Keifer Sutherland series 24 for the big screen. With the focus on a plot to assassinate the President of the United States, a race against time, and plenty of Secret Service agents, the agency under the spotlight in The Sentinel.

But wait, the protagonist turns out to be Michael Douglas' character Pete Garrison instead, a veteran Secret Service agent famed for taking the bullet for Reagan in 1981. The SS agents are specially trained to "take the bullet", which is what makes them special - who in the right mind will put themselves in the line of a bullet and a target? But Garrison gets implicated in the assassination plot, and has to run for his life while at the same time doing his bit of investigations into the plot. All this because of his failure in a polygraph test, due to his adulterous banging of the First Lady (Kim Basinger). Tsk.

There are shades of Clint Eastwood's In the Line of Fire. Both featured aging actors, and aging veteran has-been heroes with a bit of a historical reference, who took the bullet in their respective tours of duty. While Eastwood's movie has a more enigmatic villain in John Malkovich, The Sentinel suffered from its lack of a central strong villain, preferring to share the assassination responsibility amongst many forgettable ex-KGB villains, and the mole within the Presidential Detail. With Douglas on the run from the law, he becomes similar to Dr. Richard Kimble of The Fugitive, hunting the proverbial one-armed man while at the same time, relying on his smarts to outwit fellow agents, which turned out to be quite interesting to watch - despite slick processes, it still boils down to the performance and gullibility of individual agents.

Keifer Sutherland and Eva Longoria, top TV stars of today from 24 and Desperate Housewives, get relegated into support roles as the Secret Service investigators who are looking into Garrison's probable involvement in the assassination plot, and at times seem to have lept off the pages of CSI with their forensics skills. The beautiful couple had chemistry that could have resembled X-Files' Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, but alas these two had very little to do here. We know the reason why they're in the movie, and that is to get their fans into the theatres. Also, Longoria's role seemed unable to shake off her sexy-mama Gabrielle, and here, has her in fairly low cut blouses (Sutherland actually tells her to cover up) and tight pants (ogle-fest for fellow agents).

Nonetheless, it's still a pretty interesting look into the lives of probably the most highly charged and tense protection detail in the world, and the typical threats that they face daily, including the following up on every nutcase's threat on the life of the most powerful man in the world. It's a decent suspense and investigative thriller, with enough subplots to keep you entertained. But one thing though, like most ending action sequences, this one has a big enough loophole for you to fly a jumbo jet through.

OK, but nothing new
This movie follows the cliché of framed guy out to prove his innocence. Only difference is it stars A lister Michael Douglous and Keifer Sutherland brings his Jack Bauer clone to the big screen. Eva Longeria has very little to do and they didn't need to cast a recognizable name for that role.

Douglas is a FBI agent famous for saving Reagan whom is assigned to protect the first lady; small problem-he's having an affair with her. Russian terriorts have a mole on the inside, another FBI agent. They assignate a FBI agent who may know what is going on- in come Keifer and Eva to investigate the murder. Mean while Douglas is being black mailed and has s snitch that tells him about the mole. Everyone must take a lie detector test, but he fails because of the affair. The rest of the movie is him on the run trying to find the mole and stop the assignation attempt on the President.

At the end, I'd like to know how all the terrorists hid in the building waiting to shoot the President. Every building is always searched ahead of time . I didn't get that.

FINAL VERDICT: This plot has been done many times. It's still OK but nothing to get excited over.

Finally a good script
Went to see the preview of The Sentinel last night and was pleasantly surprised by the excellent script (which is rare these days) and an exciting movie with many twists and turns. Michael Douglas and Keifer Sutherland are excellent in their parts. The ladies in the movie were there for their looks and the acting was just so so on their part. If you want to see an exciting movie I suggest that you go see this fine film and you will certainly get your moneys worth for the two hours that you spend in the theater. This is one of the best things that I have seen Michael Douglas do in a few years. I do not know if I would buy the DVD when it comes out, but it certainly was worth going to see at the local movie theater.

Not the best I've seen
I was enthusiastic about this film being the '24' fan that I am and I knew it was going to be a bad movie but had to see it for myself.

The story line is crud, Michael Douglas has done much better and there have been hundreds of films such as this in the past before.

The only remotely interesting part of this film was the parts at the beginning when they go into detail as to how the President is protected.

Kiefer Sutherland was probably paid a barrel load for this movie and it will certainly be one he wont be remembered for.

Script - Poor Beginning - Average Ending - Poor
