Sister Act Storyline: Sister Act is about a Reno lounge singer named Deloris Van Cartier who witnesses her mobster boyfriend killing an employee. She is then hidden in a convent under a witness protection program. She soon makes friends with the nuns, especially Sister Mary Robert, Sister Mary Lazarus and Sister Mary Patrick. After the Mother Superior catches Deloris going out to a bar in the night followed by Mary Robert and Mary Patrick, she orders her to join the church choir. Only to find her coaching the choir and turning them into swingin' singin' sisters. The choir proves to be a big success with the surrounding neighborhood, but will Deloris' boyfriend track her down.

Triumph Oh Ye Cherubim! 7 of 10.
This is not the best movie of all times. But it is one of my very favourite ones. Every time I see this movie, I want to join that convent. And I'm not even a christian. Okay, so the plot is not too credible. And neither are the characters. So the story is predictable. So what? This does what a feel-good movie is supposed to do: it makes you feel good. It makes you believe that everything will turn out fine, that true friendship conquers all and that we'll all end up as rejoicing seraphim. Of course, it also has two of my favourite actresses: Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith, on opposite sides of the table. Whatever they touch turns to gold. Or at least, gold-plated. This film is just a lot of fun, no higher aspirations, no deeper meaning. Just an enjoyable afternoon, which will leave little of its story-line in your head, but most of its songs. Which is also a good thing.
The songs are great
I love this movie because I love how the lady that Whoopi plays goes into that church and gets those nuns to singing so good that the church goes from almost dead empty to being packed so tight that they have no place to sit at. I like how she has them start out with normal church like singing then gets the one old nun who plays the piano to start up the music for the singing that pulls people into that church. I also like how those other nuns risk their lives by going into Reno after those men who took Whoopi back with them and they are all there to help her because of how she helped get their church back to being a good place again. This movie is a classic for the songs
Nice plot and music
I knew "Sister Act" about 3 years ago. In music lesson, I sung "Hail Holy Queen" which is song used in this movie so I was interested in it and watched movie soon. I think that the story is heart-warming, energetic and stimulating. Sisters practice songs very hard. At first, their song is not good but as a result of hard practice they become good at sing. This scene impressed me. In addition, I was moved by sacred song that is arranged rock version. It is new and interesting for me. I think that most of people is surprised it when they listen to it first because we probably recognize sacred song is comfortable or calm music. I like rock version too, of course. It is fantastic combination. I can understand young people come to go to church. This song makes us happy.
Great movie with great music
This is a great film. Whoopi Goldberg does a fantastic job in this movie. She plays a singer who witnesses a crime. The guy who committed the crime is trying to find her because she witnessed the crime so she goes into hiding in the convent and poses as a nun. While at the convent she becomes the new director of the choir. This movie is great, it has a lot of laughs as well as a lot of great music. This is a great movie for people of all ages. This is a film that both children and adults can appreciate and love. It also poses lessons, it showed how Deloris changed the convent and also how the convent changed her and what they learned from each other.
Nuns on the Run- Fun Movie
Ah, Sister Act… I am one of those new age types, you know, the kind of people who believe in laughter being the best medicine. So the other weekend I was sick, suddenly and unbearably. I could barely drag myself to the couch, where buried under tens of billions of blankets I shivered and pushed play on my remote. I had put Sister Act in because it's feel good, familiar and funny. I also have a crush on Kathy Najimy (the Voice of Mrs. Peggy Hill from TV's King of the Hill). Anyway, I drank fluids, watched sister act, laughed, cried just a little, and felt much better in no time.

So I recommend this movie. It's sort of a cookie cutter tale, identity shift results in personal growth for the main character- but having mobsters/goons, nuns, the witness protection program and the pope- spices it up a bit. And the music, some horrible, some beautiful, it's worth a listen, especially when Whoopi Goldberg turns the crappy choir (that probably used to repel church goers) into a modern and harmonized group (that brings new life to the church).

In a way this is a very time period specific kind of movie- which I always enjoy. I can't imagine it taking place at any other time than the late 80's/early 90's… (1992). The generic music that fills the background from time to time is very… 21 Jump Street? Something… Of Coarse Kathy Najimy is wonderful in this film, as is Whoopi, and Maggie Smith- pre Hogwarts! How cool is that?
Great Movie
This is a great movie. It is light, interesting, funny, and - well, just great. The plot is not extremely predictable, though you can tell what could happen after a while. All the characters were entertaining. The night club scene with Mary Roberts, Mary Clarence, and Kathy Najimy's character was great... as was the scene where Delores becomes Mary Clarence and the nuns in church here her yell at Mother Superior because of the wardrobe.
Sister Act (1992) is a smart well made comedy with great characters. Whoopi Goldberg really plays her starring role Dolores well, she is touching, delightful, entertaining, and hilarious when she needs to be. Maggie smith is awesome too! She is smart, funny, and fits the role very well. Kathy Najimy is absolutely hilarious here! When she sings so horribly at first, I was in the floor dying laughing, her Comedy just really works in this movie. The writing here is great, it's comedic style just works so well with the actors and their performances. The characters are also just so incredibly lovable, you automatically sympathize with them and pull hard for them. This film really works due to the writing and the performances, that's what lifts it up. Well that and the singing, the fun hip gospel that Whoopi inspires in this convent. This film is just a good time to have, It'll make you laugh and fell heart warmed at the same time. 8/10 for sister act.
I absolutely love this movie
I love Sister Act one and two they're both action and they're trying to get your attention to never give up on something you love or are beginning to love especially with Whoopi Goldberg she's the one that makes it as funny as it is Sister act will always be a classic favorite of Whoopi Goldberg and movies.
Whoopi as a nun!
Whoopi Goldberg plays a nun for the very first time in this movie. Whoopi's boyfriend which so happens to be a mafia gang leader runs away when she accidentally witness a victim killed by her boyfriend. When she does run away the police keep her in hiding in a church. Good movie and good work from the cinematographers.
Absolutely Hilarious!
Well, lets get down to it. Sister Act is probably the best and most comic film I have ever seen. And that, my dear friends, is not because of the illustrious Whoopi Goldberg (she's absolutely brilliant, by the way) but because of the supporting cast. The film would not exist if they were not there.

ALERT* SPOILERS AHEAD * ALERT * SPOILERS AHEAD * Whoopi plays Doloris Van Cartier, a singer in a Reno casino. She's dating an all time big man mobster, Vince (Harvey Keitel, From Dusk Till Dawn) and he is cheating on his wife to be with her. However, when Vince gives his wife's jacket to Deloris, she thinks he has gone far enough. She storms up to the office and storms in, where she witnesses Vince signalling for an informant to be shot. This scene is not explicit and all you hear is the gun shot. She runs off knowing that the cronies are going to kill her and the police put her in the place they know she'll never be found: a nun's convent. Soon, Sister Mary Clarence gets down and dirty and teaches all of the nuns there an important lesson. And, she takes control of the choir, which in turn sees them give us '90s versions of Hail Holy Queen, My "Guy" and I Will Follow Him.

Wendy Makkenna is superb as the shy Sister Mary Robert whose voice is out of this world. She (although it is not actually the actresses voice) gives the songs their appeal and their gift of lifting you right up. I guarantee you will replay the final song at least 10 times, if only to see Whoopi getting down to some good, old-fashioned butt-shaking. And of course, what kind of person would I be if I didn't mention Kathy Najimi (Hocus Pocus) as Sister Mary Patrick (I think that's her character's name anyway.) She never fails to put a smile on your face.

Now, as my review comes to an end, I ask a question. Why is the repulsive sequel out on DVD when this brilliant array of comedy isn't?
