A comedy with select funny blooms
Director Ken Marino (also an Actor, Director and Producer) presents (as Rob Lowes character states in the film) an "Independent film" that has funny at its roots, but it take a lot of watering, nurturing and waiting for the few select comedy blooms. Maximo (Eugenio Derbez, primarily a Spanish Producer/Director) was once the "it guy". Years later, he's out of his kept marriage with Peggy (well know character actress Renee Taylor) and now on the hunt for the next Miss Right. Helping him is his equally hustling friend Rick (cheesing it up like only pretty boy Rob Lowe can), whose own "lady friend" Millicent (Linda Lavin - "Alice") keeps him jumping and humping. Bunking at his sister Sara's (Salma Hayek, in a new less sexy but appealing role), he takes it upon him self to mentor her young shy son Cody (the adorable Raphael Alejandro - TV's "Once Upon a Time"). While Cody learns how to attract his schoolmate little Adren (equally adorable McKenna Grace - TV's "Designated Survivor"), Miximo has his eye on her grandmother Celeste (the one and only Raquel Welch, in a very odd character role). Toss in, Yogurt store manager, and cat fanatic Cindy (Kristen Bell), and over the top "Wrap Your Vehicle" managers Rob Huebel and Rob Riggle, and all the makings of a fun sexy comedy are there! Unfortunately, director Marino can't make funny out of writers Chris Spain and Jon Zack's script that is filled with gags that go on and on. At least there's some initial "eye candy" with Vadhir Derbez (Spanish Actor/Singer and son of Eugene) as 22-year old Maximo.
No More Talking About Not Talking
Maximo (Eugenio Derbez) learned a lesson early in life, that hard work doesn't pay. His sister Sara (Salma Hayek) desires to be an architect. After being married to wealthy elderly lady for 25 years, Maximo gets dumped and is forced to lived with his sister and 10 year old nephew. While still on the prowl, Maximo teaches his nephew how to get a girl but not without consequences.

This is a film that is safe for much of the family that can understand the adult themes. The film was smile funny, but not a side splitting comedy. It includes a cast of stars and a few walk-ons that pop in the background uncredited.

Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell, Michael Cera, Rob Corddry, Rob Riggle, Raquel Welch and a fat Weird Al' Yankovic.

Guide: No F-words, sex, or nudity. Uses the "S" word.
It's called passion, baby
There I was having glided into my seat just in time. F-15. I had just purchased the last ticket. Sitting in the theater, in a reclined chair, curled up with popcorn and jalapenos, expecting everything and nothing at once. The energy in the theater was palpable. It was a full house. How to be a Latin Lover proved a delightful movie to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon in May. An easy story, not too heavy, not too light, just the right amount of the absurd. And speckled with laughs from start to finish. Skip the candy at the concession stand. The very appealing vision of a middle-aged Rob Lowe as a gigolo offers up eye candy galore. Kudos to Lowe for simply aging so well. A cute, silly, funny and sweet story offering a refreshing cultural and ethnic Latin flair that sparkles on-screen. Oh, Hayek's got moves! It's called passion, baby.
Scintillating, Sexy, Summer Entertainment
Delightful 2017 farce about modern Los Angeles mores and the macho gigolo caught in the middle of them. Eugenio (Eugene) Derbez, currently no. 1 Spanish-language actor in the world, is quick making inroads here in the USA with his long-running TV show EL SHOW DE DERBEZ and a prior 2013 film comedy. HOW TO BE A Latin LOVER is a supremely well-done farce with sexual zing and satirical zip, playing on this side of the border in English with a few Spanish subtitles.

(Spoilers): Derbez is "Max," a middle-aged "kept man" whose aging wife dumps him after he scams one too many Rolexes and MacLarens out of her. He winds up homeless, depending on his Hollywood buddy Rick (Rob Lowe) from their pool-skimming, widow-seducing days at the country club, to find him temporary shelter. When that fails, he reluctantly winds up at the modest apartment of his sister (Salma Hayek), who has a 10-year old (Rafael Alejandro) to worry about, who very reluctantly takes him in. (If you don't suspect an UNCLE BUCK-type subplot soon opens up with the intellectual boy left in the hands of his semi-sleazy uncle to the consternation of his hard-working sister, you don't know formula.)

A sprightly supporting cast melds some good old Hollywood ladies (Raquel Welch, Linda Lavin, Renee Taylor) with relative newcomers like Kristen Bell, Rob Riggle, Michael Cera and Derbez's own son Vadhir, playing Max as a 20-year-old. I think of this flick as more of a social than sex comedy, but if it's a sex comedy its PG-13 rating comes not from nasty language or sordid situations, as there are none, but from the exuberant way Max and Rick rock their Speedos. I happen to believe that the current sub-six rating here may have to do with the fact that early reviews came mostly from California, which tends to be tough on its own. More than anything, it's Derbez himself whose wit, ingenuity and intelligence save this well-endowed Hollywood romp from the dullness possible in its several tried-and-true plot streams.
The only joke this movie delivers....'This is considered comedy'
From the title alone one can predict what type of content this is and they wont be wrong at all. I didn't have high hopes but I wanted to have a laugh at some of the jokes. Alas this had almost none. I didn't laugh at almost any of the sad attempts of the writers 'comedy' scenes.

The acting were below average. The directing was pretty bad. The story is predictable. So long story short, skip it.
Pretty good
Low concept (nothing new but all in). High budget (a lot of fairly expensive scenes). Great casting (a handful of real life Hollywood survivors). Not always funny but a few times over-the-top hilarious. Sweet, but mostly in an after-school-special way. Outtakes over the credits are a nice bonus. A poor man's La La Land (looked to be all filmed in L.A.). While waiting for this screening I spent 30 minutes watching The Zookeeper's Wife, so I had movies-as-serious-stuff whiplash. I predict that this won't be a crossover hit, but will turn a small profit (as it deserves to). Worth my time and senior discount ticket, but if you don't like silly pick something else. Casting alone worth it for most people. Finally, kudos for a very young child actor who looked real and was used sensitively.
"How to Be a Latin Lover" is predictable, but pleasant, sweet and funny.
Eugenio Derbez. Recognize the name? If not, you're probably not a big fan of Latin cinema. But even if you watch only English-language movies and avoid subtitles like the plague, you're likely to hear more about Derbez. He's a Mexican actor, comedian and writer, as well as a director and producer of TV and movies. According to Wikipedia, Derbez "is one of the most influential creative forces in Latin America, and is one of the most recognized actors among the Spanish-speaking population in the US." His 2013 comedy-drama "Instructions Not Included", which he starred in, co-wrote and directed, became the first Spanish-language film to top $100 million in worldwide box office. In 2014, Variety magazine called Derbez "the most influential Hispanic male in the entertainment industry." 2017 marks his first starring role in a (mostly) English-language feature film, the comedy "How to Be a Latin Lover" (PG-13, 1:55).

Maximo (Derbez) is living the dream. He's well-ensconced in the lap of luxury and he's a kept man – thanks to his very rich and much older wife (Renée Taylor). This was his plan all along – to use his Latin charms to get a sugar mama and never have to work a day in his life. Maximo was doing great, living in a mansion, driving expensive cars, etc., until his benefactor decides to give him his walking papers, which, in this case, is a copy of the prenup that he signed years earlier. With no money and nowhere to live, he wants to move in with his fellow gigolo, Rick (Rob Lowe), but that wouldn't go over very well with Rick's rich (and kinky) aged lover, Millicent (Linda Lavin). This lands Maximo on the doorstep of his estranged sister, Sara (Salma Hayek), single mother to nerdy, sweet, 10-year-old Hugo (Raphael Alejandro). None of the three of them are particularly happy about this turn of events, but, hey, family is family, right? Maximo fully intends for his humiliating slumming with Sara and Hugo to be a temporary arrangement. He's on the prowl, looking for his next mark. He thinks he finds her in an extremely wealthy widow named Celeste (Raquel Welch), but she seems impossible to get to, especially with her chauffeur (Rob Corddry) doubling as her omnipresent gatekeeper. While Maximo works out a plan, he gets money by conning a couple of bone-headed local businessmen (Rob Riggle and Ron Huebel) and working for the manager (Kristen Bell) at a frozen yogurt shop. Maximo thinks he sees his way into Celeste's life when he learns that Hugo has a crush on his classmate, Arden (Mckenna Grace), who happens to be Celeste's granddaughter. But getting his foot in the wealthy grandmother's expensive doors will require Maximo to teach his nephew how to be a miniature Latin lover and win Arden's affections, while distracting Sara by pushing her into the arms of a neighbor (Ilan Arditti) with whom Sara shares a mutual attraction.

"How to Be a Latin Lover" is predictable, but pleasant, sweet and funny. Although formulaic, its basic premise is fairly original and enjoyable. Derbez is equal parts charismatic and entertaining, while the rest of the talented cast is game for whatever the writers and director send their way. Besides Derbez, this movie also marks a coming-out party of sorts for screenwriters Jon Zack (with only a couple previous feature films to his credit) and Chris Spain (this being his first IMDb writing credit), as well as director Ken Marino. Marino, after acting in over 100 movies and TV shows, doing some writing for each medium and directing for eight different TV series, makes this his feature directorial debut.

These filmmakers bring us comedy that's a mixture of slapstick, juvenile humor and just good, old-fashioned strange situations and strained family relationships. And all that comes with at least some family values and growth on the part of the main characters. It's somewhat simplistic, but almost always fun. And, yes, there are occasional subtitles (during some of the scenes in which Maximo interacts with another Spanish-speaking character), but this movie is funny and heartfelt enough to entertain all but the most jaded Movie Fans – and strong enough to earn Derbez many more English-speaking fans. The Vidiot Reviews...
How to Be a Latin Lover

To be a successful Latin lover you must consummate your sham marriage in 90-days or be deported.

Smartly, the lothario in this comedy has sex in the first 90 minutes.

Securing a sugar mama at the old of 21, Maximo (Eugenio Derbez) has spent the last 25 years leeching off his wealthy, older wife. But that all changed when she left him for a younger model (Michael Cera).

Single for the first time in ages and living with his estranged sister (Salma Hayek) and her son, who he is training to be a Latin lover, Maximo seeks help from a fellow gigolo (Rob Lowe).

With a plethora of Hollywood cameos to compensate for its unknown lead, those brief star-studded appearances are the only highlight in this predictable comedy's endless parade of sexist, racist and humorless jokes.

Incidentally, sex with a senior citizen is actually a threesome with the Grim Reaper.

Funny and heartwarming!
This movie is hilarious! It works for any occasion, you'll laugh and have a great time.

Eugenio and Salma were meant to be together on screen, their chemistry makes the audience believe they have been siblings forever.

The story manages to show a funny premise, combined with a family-heartwarming tale that only Eugenio knows how to pull off. It's family friendly, and still funny for adults.

Really recommend it!
Multi Cultural Comedy
I saw "How To Be A Latin Lover", starring Eugenio Derbez-Instructions Not Included, Beverly Hills Chihuahua; Salma Hayek-The Grown Ups movies, Across the Universe; Rob Lowe-Monster Trucks, the Austin Powers movies; Raphael Alejandro-Kindergarten Cop 2, Once Upon a Time_tv and Raquel Welch-Legally Blonde, Mother,Jugs & Speed.

This movie is a comedy for multi cultural audiences-English & Spanish. In fact, it is the first American movie to be released simultaneously in English & dubbed to Spanish-If you are not fluent in Spanish, you might be careful if you go to see it in theaters because it is being shown in both English and Spanish versions. If you are like me-not fluent-you may be wondering why Eugenio gets top billing. That's because he was recently voted most influential Hispanic in entertainment. He is a big star that most Americans have never even heard of and that is what this movie is trying to rectify. Anyway, Eugenio plays an aging gigolo that has been living off of an elderly rich woman for the past 25 years. When she dumps him for a younger guy-Michael Cera in one of the many cameos scattered throughout the movie-Eugenio has to move in with his sister, Salma and her son, Raphael. Rob plays Eugenio's close friend and fellow gigolo, who happens to be living off of his own elderly fireball, Linda Lavin-another good cameo. Eugenio then sets his sights on his next conquest, Raquel-who still looks pretty good for her age, which happens to be 77! Back to the cameos; Keep an eye out at the kids birthday party and you might see Weird Al singing and also, the guy playing the younger version of Eugenio is actually Eugenio's real life son. Overall, I thought it was funny. It's rated "PG-13" for crude humor and sexual content-including some brief partial nudity-and has a running time of 1 hour & 55 minutes. I enjoyed it enough that I would probably buy it on DVD.
