A microcosm of racism prevalent everywhere in the USA
I watched this movie for the first time this year (2006) when a friend of mine lent me this,. I had heard about it and wondered but had no idea of what to expect. It is the most powerful movie I have ever seen in my forty nine years. I had recently returned from Los Angeles and the beach area after having experienced real life gangs there and was working on a novel following up on these experiences. I don't know if we can ever really solve the underlying racial attitudes that prevail in this country. I also saw much of the 'white backlash' recently when I was out there and saw all of the characters as believable (both white and black) portraying the different gangs and why they hate each other and are ready to take it to the death. I feel this movie will help young people try and realize the consequences of racial escalation. I unfortunately feel that this country will never solve this and understandably the movie leads us to believe this also. The best lesson is it takes the consequence of violence to either change or manipulate behavior. As shown, it can go from one extreme to the other without resolve. Be prepared with this movie as it leaves no judgement with either white nor black...

Not a perfect film, but very good - Norton's performance is the highlight
"American History X" is a bold and disturbing movie about family, racism and our own self-perceptions. Its main character is Derek (Edward Norton), a neo-Nazi skinhead who is released from jail to find his younger brother (Edward Furlong) descending down the same corrupt path as he once walked.

In jail Derek learns a few things about life, and racism, or more appropriately, himself, and after becoming a free man again takes it upon himself to set his brother on the straight and narrow path.

"American History X" is not a pleasant motion picture. It begins in flashback, as Derek murders two black kids trying to break into his car. His brother, who idolizes Derek and later mimics his lifestyle, witnesses this event. It's a good message about negative influences, along with everything else.

Much has been made of the film's controversy and lawsuits. Director Tony Kaye disowned the film after Norton (allegedly) re-edited footage to give himself more screen time. Kaye tried to have his name changed on the film credits, but by this time he had already taken out a complaint in several magazines, which are against the rules of the Director's Guild. He was therefore denied the opportunity to credit the work as "directed by Humpty Dumpty." Then, musical band Anti-Hero complained to New Line Cinema (the film's international distributor) because one of the Nazi characters featured a tattoo of their band. They later wrote a song, called "NLC," bashing the company.

Despite the hard-edged controversy it's still a very good film, above all else extremely well-acted and featuring a gripping storyline – even if the direction isn't always up to par.

Edward Norton is simply superb in his role, showing extremely raw talent a mere two years after his film debut (in the Richard Gere thriller "A Primal Fear"). Norton careens between the role of a raging, vicious supremacist and a kindler, gentler version of the same character; a metamorphosis so convincing it's hard to believe it's just one actor.

The rest of the cast is good as well – Furlong gives the best performance of his career and Beverly D'Angelo and Stacy Keach have strong supporting roles. (D'Angelo in particular, who portrays a sleazy alcoholic – a stretch compared to her usual Normal Mom roles in the "Vacation" movies.) "American History X" isn't exactly rewarding of all the praise it has been lavished since its release (mainly from viewers rather than critics, who were less kind) – it isn't the best movie of its kind or even a flawless one. The black-and-white photography isn't on the same level, visually, as "Raging Bull" or "Schindler's List." The preaching is a bit heavy-handed at times.

But it still manages to convey an important lesson and boasts great acting complimented by an (overall) impressive, gut-wrenching screenplay. A must-see for all who can stomach its content.

It's A Movie That Changed The Way Movies Are Made
I remember discovering this amazing and thought provoking movie back in the day when I started high school. It is and still to this day is Edward Norton's best acting where he transforms fully and you don't see the actor anymore but instead an intense real life character going through all the range of emotion and then growing from his mistakes and trying to get his life, friends, and family back on track. Plus who can forget that moment early on in the movie where he stomps.OMFG! That was the most gangsta move ever depicted in a movie at the time! The sad thing is that I don't think a movie has come out that was this revolutionary since.

A powerful Vengeful Masterpiece
Well better late than never. I Finally watched this movie and boy I was impressed by it. The pacing editing character development acting is top notch.Though it may seem bit violent but these only further polish the film. Norton is excellent he is truly most underrated actor and furlong too does excellent job as narrator.it has one of most powerful line which truly startled me its quote;"Has anything you've done made your life better?" this was enough for me to know the greatness of this movie. This is the most see movie for any people with powerful message you may think differently on seeing Nazi logo and judge it well I did that too I was dead wrong. Go check out the movie and prepared to be moved by its sheer brilliance.

A Shining Example of Hollywood's Arrogance
What a bunch of self-righteous, self-serving, pretentious psychobabble! I am not sure where to begin attacking this film for the farce it is, but I guess I should start by saying that this has very little if anything to do with white pride or racialism, in this country or elsewhere. Believe me I've seen a load of unbelievable farces in my time, but they all seemed entertaining somehow, except this, I don't know perhaps it's my experience with the real-life racialist movement here.

I really did like the way, that Derek got three years for blasting away a couple of thugs who were threatening his life by breaking into his home, and when he's released it tries to make you feel guilty when the cool, righteous, and enlightened negro isn't getting out anytime soon, since he committed crimes that obviously weren't in the name of self-defense.

Also, I'm surprised that Derek's incarceration in the joint, led to his ultimate rehabilitation as a racist. In reality, it probably would've affirmed his previous views tenfold.

Another thing I liked was the attack on the family. The writers portray Derek's father, for instance, as some workaholic, redneck cop w/ a Marlon Brando attitude towards blacks and the system. The emotion of this scene, is almost enough, to make one feel ashamed for harboring a rational, sound opinion or belief on a critical issue such as that. It's revolting.

There are probably a few points I could rag on, but one thing that really caught my eye, which I found disturbing were the others' reviews. Almost no one here spoted the political agenda of this film, as another propaganda film, against White America, and that's truly shocking. When will people wake up around here, and smell the coffee?

This review may not be too popular, but I could care less, after all, opinions are only opinions.

Decent but overdramatic and overrated
'American History X' is a decent but flawed drama about Derek, a former neo-Nazi who, after serving time in prison for the murder of a black man, reforms himself and tries to prevent his younger brother, Danny, from following in his footsteps. The film cuts back and forth between the past and present, showing us what Derek used to be like and the path that his younger brother is at risk of going down.

It's a solid drama and an interesting enough watch, but with an average rating of 8.5 it's also massively overrated. Several parts of the film feel forced and not at all convincing, especially the ending which was over-the-top and completely unnecessary. The film contains enough drama without the need for an forced and overdramatic ending that contributes very little to the story other than some blood and violence. Overall, 'American History X' is a decent but overrated drama film.

Disturbing and powerful
American History X stars Edward Norton as a racist, xenophobic skinhead who is convicted of murder and sent to prison. It follows the effect of this on his family, specifically on his younger brother, played by Edward Furlong, who idolizes him and yearns to follow in his footsteps.

The movie is powerful and disturbing in the insider's look it gives us into the dark world of violent racist skinhead groups. For this reason, it is very difficult to watch. But it's an important film, because it tackles a subject that Hollywood is usually content to shy away from.

Edward Norton, always one of my favourite actors, has one of his best roles of all time here. He is absolutely brilliant in his portrayal of Derek Vinyard, a character whose charisma and intelligence could have led him down pretty much any path, but who chose the wrong road. How many infamous men in history have had the exact same qualities? Countless. Norton embraces the role, wholly embodying the most terrible qualities of his character, and refusing to shy away from giving his all to even the most difficult scenes. He has even transformed his entire body to play this part (compare his muscular build here to his scrawniness in "Fight Club", for instance). Norton is so believable, and so compelling to watch, that it's all too easy to see how he could have recruited and inspired so many people to his fanatically hateful ideology. Also brilliant is Avery Brooks as the schoolteacher who tries so hard to redeem Derek when most people would have written him off long ago. Notable among smaller roles are performances by Fairuza Balk as Vinyard's girlfriend and Beverly D'Angelo as his conflicted mother. This is a dramatic film, and the acting has made it what it is.

My criticisms are few. Furlong's acting isn't quite as strong - at times it seems like he's reading lines aloud for a teacher. And without giving too much away, the ending comes across as a bit too contrived. At times, the movie skirts dangerously close to after-school-special territory, and it can be a bit heavy-handed in its preachiness. It's not a perfect film, by any means.

But it's a provocative film, one that I urge parents to watch with their teenagers and that is sure to open up a lot of discussion. A must-see.

powerful
I don't want to give too much away to reader's who may not have seen the film, so I won't say much...but if I had to use one word to sum up American History X, it would be "powerful". This is the kind of film that is missing in the current film environment that is usually based more around flash than substance, ie special effects and a physically attractive cast are commonly used to win over audiences as opposed to a solid plot containing powerful messages that actually might make you think. I saw this movie last night and it is a fascinating insight into the insecurity of young people and their desire to belong to something, to feel accepted. I believe this theme is equally as prevalent as the denunciation of racism throughout the film. Another thing I liked is that the cast is portrayed as being incredibly human... nobody in this film is "perfect", as we frequently see in other films. From the protagonist to his young brother to the wise English teacher, they have all had their share of problems in the past, as well as in the present. I think it is a testament to the director and cast that we actually end the film sympathising with a convicted murderer. The moral of the film is that hate is baggage, and we reap what we sew in life. We need to ask ourselves that one question when our lives are veering off course "Has anything I've done made my life better?". For the protagonist in American History X, this simple advice is enough to turn around his life from that point on... but it is too late to undo the consequences of his wide-reaching influences, hurting him in the most painful place he ever could have imagined. So once again, this film is sheer power. Certainly it is disturbing in parts, and probably not for young children or the overly sensitive. Nevertheless, it is a fantastic film, truly one of the best of all time. I give it 9 out of 10 stars.

"Even if you change your life path, there are always signs to reminds you"
With this title i will summarize the main idea of the film. Hard lessons through difficult paths and how our choices affect the lives of other people. Two very powerful scenes is that with the arrest of "Derek Vinyard" and the other as contrast, with the hero in front of the mirror trying to hide with his hand the tattoo. Wonderful performance by Edward Norton.Film presents in real and at the same time realistic way the life of a family who live through the racist motive of the father. His belief affect in a negative way the two boys of the family.Mother tries to unite her sons. The amazing with the movie is how all this anger and hate replaced with love. The pain of loss is still and life gives lessons in hard way most of the times. The final scene leave us with a bittersweet feeling.

Weak Movie............About A Strong Subject
This is a movie....full of meaning ....that, in the final analysis is meaningless. It often tastes like sugar candy, and yet again, like Scotch Whisky. There are periods of sick....racism....but that never appears to be real. The key scenes when the Edward Norton character faces up to the Stacey Keach big boss Nazi horror....are under-developed. If your going to make a movie about black / white neo racism you need to come up with something better than this. This was made in 1998 and it feels like 1962. This is a film that means well...to expose the nastiness of colored hatred, yet it never comes near explaining the reasons, why blacks and whites....just do not get along. Too many weak scenes that are...not believable.
